''Twilight in Delhi'' is Ahmed Ali's first novel, originally published in English in Britain, 1940. The novel addresses India's changing social, political, and cultural climate following colonialism. ==Plot summary==
Setting of this novel is around 1911 to 1919 of Delhi city. Ahmed Ali has vividly drawn the picture of old Delhi and Muslims of that era. Apart from these there can seen the themes of disintegration, degeneration, alienation, gender and social conflicts, nostalgia, downfalls of Mu-ghal Emperors, colonialist and imperialist list effects on Indian Muslims of Delhi. Symbolism of characters and events can be seen abundantly throughout the novel which enhance its beauty and style. Images like palm tree, henna plant under the palm tree, dogs, cats and pigeons refers not only to the behaviors of characters but also the whole Muslim society. the novel starts with the dawn time twilight that refers to rise of sun as well as the rise of the protagonist Mir Nihal's living standards. On the contrary, descriptions of twilight of evening time in the closing sentences portrays the overall downfall and destruction of not only the Family of Mir Nihal but also the Mughal Empire altogether. The novel had not published until after the interference of the most famous English writer of that time E. M. Forster.
